CLOSE STILL COUNTS AS YOUKER WINS SUPER CHEVY TITLE
Rain Compacts Action into a Single Day at Rockingham Dragway

ROCKINGHAM – Whether the margin is as little as a front bumper or as much as 10 car lengths, Salisbury’s Jeremy Youker knows that a win is a win is a win.

Driving a modified 2010 Chevy Cobalt, Youker inched his way to the 4.70 Outlaws title Sunday at Rockingham Dragway in a rain-plagued Dieffenbach Superstore Super Chevy Show in which almost all the on-track action was condensed into a single day.

The No. 10 starter after missing the 4.70 second target by a healthy margin in qualifying, Youker took out No. 1 qualifier Donnie Gibbs Jr. of Mooresville in the semifinals and then stopped Statesville’s James Bunton in the final.

His margin of victory in those two final races was a combined .01 of a second -- .004 over Gibbs and .006 over Bunton.

In Top Eliminator, which featured a combined two-day purse to compensate for Saturday’s total rainout, Nashville’s Phillip Bullock claimed the $4,200 top prize by pushing final round foe Donald Norris of Conway, S.C., into a breakout foul with a solid .013 package.

Doug Cline, of Stanfield, made exhibition runs in his street driven 1969 Camaro, turning a best time in the eighth mile of 4.57 with a speed of 171.16 mph. Upon arrival on Friday he actually drove the all steel-body car to a local grocery store.

Other event winners included Richard Alford of Raleigh, in Footbrake, Chase Wagner of Willow Springs in Jr. Dragster and Bob Perrot of Moseley, Va., in the D.O.T. class.

Although he lost the $2,500 top prize to Alford, Hamlet’s Trey Sikes laid down an almost perfect run against Lumberton’s J.D. Lewis in the quarterfinals, combining a .001 reaction time with a track time of 9.630 seconds on a 9.630 target. It was a rare .001 package against which Lewis had no chance. Sikes also was one of the last three in the D.O.T. class before losing to Rockingham’s Tim Clark.

In the car show competition, Billy Moore of Troutman won the Best of Show in his stunning 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air.

This week, the Rock goes from four wheels to two with the 24th renewal of the Jim McClure All-Harley Nitro Nationals featuring Saturday qualifying and Sunday eliminations in all the standard Harley categories including Top Fuel, Pro Fuel and Funny Bike.

Adult tickets are $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday although a $45 super ticket covers both days and Friday’s test session. A Saturday-Sunday ticket also is available in advance for $35.

ROCKINGHAM – Results from Sunday’s annual Dieffenbach Superstore Super Chevy Show presented by the Richmond County Tourism Authority at Rockingham Dragway (drivers from North Carolina unless otherwise stipulated. Results include reaction time, track time, finish line speed and, when applicable, target time):
