Shootout Opener
ROCKINGHAM, N.C.
– An unfavorable
weather forecast
kept away many
of the usual
suspects,
especially those
facing lengthy
road trips, but
it didn’t keep
Steve Murray of
Stephens City,
Va., from
putting together
a .009 final
round package to
win the featured
Pro ET title in
Rockingham
Dragway’s
season-opening
Outlaw Bike
Shootout.
Veteran Barry
Pryer Sr. of
Chesapeake, Va.,
was the victim
of Murray’s
final round gem
which included a
near perfect
.002 reaction
time. That put
Pryer at a big
disadvantage
that he couldn’t
overcome even
though he only
missed his
target time by
only .003 of a
second.
With rain
forecast for
both Saturday
and Sunday and
racers and fans
calling the
track to cancel
travel plans
accordingly,
Dragway
officials opted
to cancel the
Sunday racing
program and pay
a
reduced Saturday
purse based on entry
numbers – $2,000 to
win in Pro ET and
$1,200 to win in
Street ET.
“It’s really
frustrating that
people rely so
heavily on the
weather forecast to
make their plans
even though it’s
been proven that
those guys can’t
accurately predict
the weather beyond a
24-hour window,”
said Rockingham
owner Steve Earwood.
“We had great racing
weather but so many
of our regulars were
afraid of the
forecast and stayed
home.”
Other winners
included Shayne
Procter of Indian
Head, Md., in Street
ET, Bobby Lovingood
of Leland, N.C., in
4.60 Index, Brian
Bolton of Fulton,
Ky., in 5.20 Index
and Scottie Keller
of Mooresville,
N.C., in 5.60 Index.
