PASCHAL BEATS
HIMSELF, BUT STILL
WINS
Birt, Dean Also
Claim $5,000
Winners’ Shares in
Triple Fives Event
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. –
Michael Paschal beat
himself Sunday at
Rockingham Dragway
but without the
penalty one normally
might expect.
Taking advantage of
the event’s
double-entry option,
the Pleasant Garden
bracket racer was
both winner and
runner-up on the
final day of The
Rock’s Triple Fives
Championship and for
his perfection he
took home both the
$5,000 top prize and
the $1,500 runner-up
money. Other $5.000
winners were Dan
Birt of Barnwell,
S.C., who won on
Friday, and
Sanford’s Chris Dean
who directed his
1969 Chevy Camaro to
the winners’ circle
on Saturday.
“That doesn’t happen
very often,”
Rockingham track
owner Steve Earwood
said of Paschal’s
feat, “and
especially not when
the field is as good
as this one was.
Paschal waded
through eight rounds
of racing to find
himself paired in
the final round
with, well,
himself. He beat
18-year-old
sensation Ross
Freeman of
Westville, S.C., in
one semifinal and
then dispatched
third generation
racer Chris Ferguson
of Fort Lauderdale,
Fla., son of former
IHRA World Champion
Glenn Ferguson, in
the other. While he
didn’t reach the
finals on either of
the three days,
Freeman, a high
school student in
Westville, went to
the semifinals two
times during the
weekend, winning
seven rounds on
Friday and seven
more on Sunday in
his Footbrake Nova.
The event ran
separate Footbrake
and Top Eliminator
brackets until the
late rounds when the
two ran together.
Surprisingly,
Paschal’s was the
only dragster to
win. The first two
days belonged to the
full body cars with
Birt winning in an
’81 Camaro and Dean
in a ’69 model.
The event also
determined the
Rockingham Dragway’s
2017 track
championship in the
Jr. Dragster
category. Kimberly
Messer of Four Oaks
and Kaylee Creech of
Clayton tied for the
title and, as a
result, will reign
as co-champions.
