ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Former
track record-holder Doug
Vancil took advantage of
Takeshi Shigematsu’s first
round upset loss Sunday at
Rockingham Dragway to pull
into a dead heat with the
Japanese rider for the Top
Fuel points lead with just
two races remaining in the
All-Harley Drag Racing
Association series.
Vancil, the veteran from
Albuquerque, N.M., could
have taken over the lead
with a victory in the
Screamin’ Eagle Performance
Parts Nationals, but he was
turned back in Sunday’s
final round by Mike Romine
of Sturgis, Mich.
Shigematsu, who resides in
Ehime, Japan, was beaten in
the first round Sunday by
Jake Stordeur of Milford,
Ohio, who himself was ousted
one round later by North
Carolina veteran Tommy
Grimes of Pfafftown.
More than 400 riders from 31
states, Japan and Norway
participated in the two-day
event which produced four
national records.
Among the other champions
crowned Sunday was NHRA Pro
Stock Motorcycle regular
Chip Ellis of Plains, Ga.,
who drove the V-twin on
which he has been the No. 1
qualifier at the last three
races in the NHRA series to
victory in Pro Gas. Ellis,
one of the four qualifiers
for NHRA’s Countdown to the
Championship that will be
decided in a two-race
shootout at Las Vegas, Nev.,
and Pomona, Calif., also set
a national Pro Gas record.
Former IHRA World Champion
Jay Turner of Julian, N.C.,
a finalist in every Pro Fuel
race contested this season
in the AHDRA series, was
upended in the final round
Sunday by Randal Andras of
Morgan City, La., after
dominating the early rounds.
Turner posted the quickest
time in each of the first
three elimination rounds
including a best of the
event 6.599 to beat Russ
Sowers of Hermitage, Pa.,
before suffering problems in
the final and slowing to
13.589 seconds. Despite the
final round loss, Turner
increased his points lead
over second place Armon Furr,
who was upset in the first
round.
Other winners were Greg
Krenik of Corrales, N.M., in
Pro Stock; Rick Moore of
Reading, Pa., in Pro Drag;
Randy Borho of Beaver Creek,
Ore., who set a national
record en route to the Pro
Modified title; Andy Simon
of Fairless Hills, Pa., in
Street Pro; Chuck Kennedy of
Adell, Wis., in Super Gas;
Larry Maynhart of Swanton,
Ohio, in Super Sport; Chip
Sutinen of Ypsilanti, Mich.,
in Screamin’ Eagle
Performance; and Douglas
Horne of Aberdeen, Md., in
Screamin’ Eagle Destroyer.
Horne used his starting line
skills to get past Valerie
Thompson of Scottsdale,
Ariz., in the final, thereby
protecting his second place
standing in national
points. Thompson, who is
third in the national
standings, was clocked in
9.262, losing to Horne’s
slightly slower 9.265.
Lou Gerencer of Elkhart,
Ind., was the event’s only
double winner, prevailing in
both the Screamin’ Eagle
V-Rod and S&S Challenge and
holding onto second place in
both categories.
