ROCKINGHAM – Jimmy Blackman of Rockmart, Ga., used his starting line skills to win the featured Outlaw 10.5 title Sunday in the Holcomb Motorsports Fall Civil Wars pro street showdown at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

 

Blackman’s 1992 Pontiac Trans Am was outperformed in each of the last two elimination rounds, but the Georgia driver compensated for slightly slower eighth mile performance numbers with a reaction times of .030 and .008 that earned him the $10,000 top prize.

 

His nearly-perfect .008 in the final made a 4.640 second time a winner over the 4.590 posted by Charlie Dobin of Quarryville, Pa..  Blackman’s .030 light in the semifinals enabled him to squeak past Michael Martin’s giant-killing Camaro even though the Virginia driver enjoyed a 4.668-4.674 performance edge.

 

Ironically, it was Martin’s starting line advantage that took out many-time Rockingham winner Steve Kirk of Monroe, Ga., in the second round by a mere .005 of a second.

 

Other winners included all-conquering Darrin Hoyle of Taylorsville in Limited Street, Aaron Lee of Greenville, S.C., in Real Street and Chris Tuten of Pelion, S.C., in Renegade Street.  Charlie McCulloch of Kennesaw, Ga., won the Open Comp title, Rockingham’s Will McKay prevailed in the Pro Tree Doorslammers class and Robert Hall of Lemmon Springs picked up the Trophy Street title.

 

In the Index classes, in which drivers try to run as close to a target number as possible without dipping underneath it, the winners were Jason Richards of Belmont in the 6.0 class, Michael Sanders of Lenoir in the 7.0 class, Todd Buckner of Mooresville in the 5.30 class and Jim Nail of Gastonia, who won the Combo Index open to drivers in all three classes.

 

Hoyle drove his 1969 Chevy Camaro to victory for the eighth consecutive time in the Civil Wars series.  The veteran has swept the spring and fall events each of the last four years.  He never was seriously challenged Sunday, winning from the No. 1 qualifying position and posting the quickest time in every round except the first in which he was unopposed.
