Hill, driving the same 2006
Ford Mustang in which he swept the spring and fall Civil Wars races a year
ago, took up where he left off, beating fellow Georgian Michael Robinson
in the final round of Outlaw 10.5 Pro Street to claim the $10,000
top prize for the third consecutive time. |

Kirk, the
2004 spring Civil Wars winner, advanced to the semifinals before his
2000 Chevrolet Camaro stumbled against Hills Mustang, slowing to
4.776 seconds. Hill, who qualified only fifth, got an easy win
in the final when Robinson encountered problems and slowed to 6.291.
Other winners in the spring classic included Darrin Hoyle,
Taylorsville, N.C., who extended his winning streak in Limited Street;
Jimmy McDowell of Garner, N.C., who repeated in Real Street;
Jason Richards of Belmont, N.C., won did the same in the 6.0
Index class; and Thad Cook of Lawndale, who prevailed in the 7.0
Index category.
Hoyle, who outran arch rival and former Civil Wars winner Keith Szabo
of Gainesville, Ga., in the final round, has won five consecutive
times in Limited Street.
By a margin of .003 of a second, indiscernible to the naked eye,
Rockinghams Will McKay had to settle for one win and one runner-up
finish in the Pro Tree Doorslammer division. McKay used a
.023 package (.012 reaction time plus a performance time just
.011 off his target) to ease his 1985 Ford Thunderbird past the 1968
Ford Mustang of Jeremy Price of Mt. Jackson, Va., on Saturday in a
race decided by .005 of a second.
On Sunday, McKay again reached the finals, but lost the title to Owen
Teague of Climax, N.C., when he missed his target number by .003 of a
second (7.247 on a 7.250 dial-in). Teague forced that error when
he drove his 1967 Camaro to a time of 6.655 on a 6.650 dial-in.
Robert Hall of Lemmon Springs, N.C., won the Trophy Street title, Matt
Mungall of Hickory, N.C., won in Renegade Street and Dale Sanders of
Eagle Springs, N.C., and Shane Williams of Knoxville, Tenn., split the
titles in Open Comp Sanders winning on Saturday and Williams
repeating as the Sunday champion. Like McKay, Williams was
within reach of a double, but lost in the Saturday semifinals.
Hills biggest scare in Outlaw Pro Street came in the second
round where Jack Barfield of Pembroke, Ga., got out to a .027 of
a second advantage at the starting line. However, Hill was able
to run him down to win by .010. He wasnt tested again.
Robinson also survived a scare en route to the final round. In
fact, his car was slower in the semifinals than the 2006 Pontiac GTO
of Richard Sexton (4.654 to 4.633). He was able to make up
the difference at the starting line, where he enjoyed a sizeable
advantage (.046-.245).
