BREWER, MARTIN AMONG WINNERS IN ROCKINGHAM'S OPENING DOUG HERBERT CAROLINA COALITION RACE

ROCKINGHAM – Lumberton’s Jerry Brewer used a near perfect .008 package Sunday to deny Chuck Martin of Connelly Springs a sweep of the Top Eliminator titles in the opening race in the 2005 Doug Herbert Performance Carolina Coalition Series at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

Brewer had a .005 of a second reaction time and then

coaxed his dragster through the eighth-mile course in 4.823 seconds (just .003 off his target time) to claim the $5,000 top prize.  Martin earned the same amount for winning Saturday’s race and, by reaching the final round of both races, moved solidly into the Top Eliminator points lead with seven races remaining.

Second in Doug Herbert Performance Coalition points last season, Martin turned back Michael Nelson Jr. of Valley Lee, Md., to win on Saturday.

The $340,000 Doug Herbert Performance Carolina Coalition Series moves next to Piedmont Dragway (April 2-3), Farmington Motor Sports Park (April 30-May 1) and Mooresville Dragway (May 21-22) before a second round of races concluding with the Carolina State Championships at Rockingham, Nov. 5-6.

Other winners in a series opener that attracted more than 280 entrants were Chris Plott of Winston-Salem and Dale Sanders of Eagle Springs in the Footbrake division and David Dean of Waxhaw, who earned a sweep in the Trailers of the East Coast Jr. Dragster division.

Plott, the Footbrake runner-up in last year’s Doug Herbert Performance Series, drove his 1970 Mercury Cougar past the 1973 Chevy Nova driven by Newton Grove’s Slim Davis for a Saturday victory while Sanders beat 2004 Rockingham track champion Roger Rhodes of Pikeville to claim the Sunday title.
