SPRING NATIONALS WEEKEND NEWS : April 25th, 2004
MILLICAN WINS AT THE ROCK FOR SIXTH CONSECUTIVE TIME

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Clay Millican won for the sixth consecutive time at Rockingham Dragway, but his Sunday victory in the 37th annual IHRA Spring Nationals didn't come as easily as the three-time reigning IHRA Top Fuel Champion had a right to expect.

After qualifying No. 1 for the 35th time in his career, Millican easily beat Bobby Lagana of Scarsdale, N.Y., in round one and

got a free ticket to his 35th career final when 74-year-old Chris Karamesines of Chicago, Ill., the oldest active driver in the sport, was unable to answer the call.

Nevertheless, the national record-holder found himself in the unusual position of having to surrender the choice of lanes in the money round to unheralded Danny Dunn of North Wilkesboro.
That's because while Millican was posting a quarter mile time of 4.861 seconds on a bye run in one semifinal, Dunn was turning in a 4.740 while disposing of perennial IHRA runner-up Bruce Litton of Indianapolis in the other.

Unfortunately, Dunn's unsponsored dragster never was able to fire a shot in the final, suffering a clutch and transmission failure on the burnout that handed Milllican an IHRA record-tying 29th career victory.

In winning his second race of the current season and his 29th in 33 races, Millican pushed the Werner Enterprises entry to a final round time of 4.636 seconds at 310.41 miles per hour.  Dunn was relegated to runner-up status for the second time in his caeer.  He lost the 1996 IHRA World Finals at Darlington, S.C., to Doug Herbert of Cherryville, N.C.

Other pro winners included John Montecalvo of Center Moriches, N.Y., who won in Pro Stock for the second time in as many 2004 events; Mike Janis, who repeated as Spring Nationals champion in Pro Modified; and Mark Thomas of Louisville, Ohio, who padded his advantage in Funny Car by winning for the second time in 2004.

Other than Dunn, the Carolina contenders fell early.

Former IHRA Pro Stock champion Mike Bell of Asheboro was upset in round one by No. 10 qualifier Steve Spiess of Manhattan, Ill.   He deserved better.  Quicker at the start by .054 of second, his Ford Escort succumbed to a Spiess-driven Chevrolet that bettered its qualifying number .063 of a second.  The margin at the finish line was .002 of a second.

That and Gastonia's Richard Penland's first round loss to Rick Jones left state representation to Jacksonville's Elijah Morton who drove his way to the semifinals before losing to No. 1 qualifier John Nobile.

In Pro Modified, where reigning IHRA Champ Mitch Stott of Mill Spring failed to make the starting field, six-time former champ Scotty Cannon of Lyman, S.C., at one point seemed poised to win his first race at Rockingham.

Unfortunately, the former NHRA Funny Car driver suffered mechanical problems in the semifinals that not only ended his bid for a first career win at Rockingham but also cost him 20 penalty points because of the resultant cleanup.

The only other Carolinians to survive pro qualifying – Rickie Smith of King, the six-time former IHRA Pro Stock champion, and Chip King of Roxboro – were ousted in the initial round.

Carolina winners in the pro-am categories included David Lambert of Kannapolis in Top Sportsman; Chuck Harris of Denton in Quick Rod; Glenn Ferguson of Archdale in Super Rod; and Jack Zimmerman of Clemmons in Stock.
