ROCKINGHAM,
N.C.
– The Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts
Nationals drew Harley-Davidson riders from 32
different states and Japan, but Carolinian Jay
Turner stole the show, winning the featured
Top Fuel championship and just missing a
double as runner-up in Pro Fuel.
Turner, son of former Piedmont Dragway owner
Jim Turner, beat Larry "Drums" Brancaccio in
the Top Fuel final with a quarter mile time
of 6.323 seconds at 221.05 miles per hour,
but it was his starting line work in the
semifinals that made that victory possible.
Opposing national record holder and No. 1
qualifier Doug Vancil of Albuquerque, N.M.,
in a battle of former IHRA Top Fuel
champions, the Burlington resident used a
.134 of a second starting line advantage to
transform his slower track time (6.310 to
Vancil's best-of-the-event 6.236) into a
winner at the finish line.
Turner's bid to double-up ended in the Pro
Fuel final where cross country traveler John
Breckenridge of Sultan, Wash., earned an
easy victory when the Carolina Harley
slowed to 8.324, well off its No. 1
qualifying performance (6.613).
Despite Breckenridge's impressive trek from
the Northwest, the long distance award went
to Takeshi Shigematsu of Ehime, Japan who,
for his travels, was unceremoniously dumped
in the first round of Top Fuel racing by
Steve Stordeur of Goshen, Ohio.
Other winners in the All-Harley Drag Racing
Association event included Rick Moore of
Reading, Pa., in Pro Drag; NHRA Pro Stock
Motorcyle regular Connie Cohen of Bristol,
Conn., in Pro Gas; Junior Pippin of Conyers,
Ga., in Pro Modified; Andy Simon of Fairless
Hills, Pa., in Street Pro; and James
McNaughton of Milwaukee, Wis., in Screamin'
Eagle V-Rod.
Michael Ray of San Antonio, Texas, won the
Screamin' Eagle Destroyer championship while
Danny Boyer of York, Pa., Dean Druschel of
Swanton, Ohio, Derek Christensen of York,
Pa., Bruce Croneberger of Cressona, Pa., and
Lou Gerencer of Elkhart, Ind., also reached
the podium.
