SMITH WINS PRO MOD TITLE AS SUPER CHEVY SHOW RETURNS TO THE ROCK

As advertised, the RichmondCountyOutdoors.com Super Chevy Show, presented by GM Performance Division, delivered Chevrolets of every shape, size, power quotient, age and description Saturday and Sunday in its long-anticipated return to Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

From Rickie Smith’s 240 mile-an-hour 2012 Chevy Camaro to the 1957 Chevy Bel Air of Kernersville’s Doug Winters to Tommy Lumley’s slick Charlotte-based 1940 Chevy coupe to the Chevy-powered altered of Aberdeen’s Todd Prevatte, it was all Chevies, all the time – with an occasional Pontiac and Buick thrown in for good measure.

In fact, Bobby Hardee of Mullins, S.C., won on Sunday at the wheel of a Pontiac Grand Am, in the process denying Donald Webb of Four Oaks a sweep of the two Pro ET titles after he had won in his Camaro on Saturday.

Other winners included Julian’s Kevin Myrich and Bobby Plyler, who the Saturday and Sunday Footbrake races, respectively; Jerry Cline of Mooresville, who won the DOT class; and Trey Bradsher of Burlington, who prevailed in Junior Dragster.

Smith, the five-time IHRA World Pro Stock Champion as well as a Pro Stock and Pro Modified winner on the NHRA tour, beat Winters in a Pro Modified shootout on the eighth-mile Saturday, sharing the racing stage with Pepe Urban, who coaxed his jet-powered big rig Freightliner truck down the quarter mile track in 7.70 seconds at 219.56 miles per hour.

While more than 250 Chevy and GM race cars found their way onto the high traction dragstrip, another 225 were subjected to the scrutiny of a panel of show car judges who named Rockingham’s Gene Smith winner of the Editor’s Choice Award, Concord’s Terry Travis winner of Outstanding Stock Car and Charlotte’s David Hammond the Outstanding Modified winner.

“It was a learning experience for us,” Earwood said. “It’s been awhile since we had one of these races. We’ll tweak the format some before next year but, all-in-all, I was very pleased not only with the numbers of race cars and show cars but with the response of our fans.”
