motorcycle tours,
will return for a
ninth season with
four events at
Rockingham and four
more at Maryland
International
Raceway.
 |
The MIRock Series
will begin and end
in North Carolina
with events March
16-18 (Honda-Suzuki
of Sanford Spring
Open), June 29-July
1 (Schnitz Summer
Sizzler), Aug. 24-26
(FBR Shop Open) and
Nov. 3-4 (Lee’s
Performance Fall
Bike Nationals.)

Other major bike
events include two
Grudge Fest events,
Feb. 25 and Sept.
15, the 13th annual
Smokeout Custom
Chopper Show and the
2nd annual East
Coast Biker Rally,
July 5-8.

For the four-wheel
contingent,
Earwood’s staff will
produce the return
of the Carolina
Coalition Bracket
Series,
manufacturer-specific
events for Ford, GM
and Mopar
aficionados and a
series of five
Phantasm Street Wars
events that skew
more toward imports
and sport compacts.

Premier among
brand-specific
events will be the
Visit Richmond
Country Super Chevy
Show, the oldest and
most successful of
all the
manufacturer-driven
events, which
returns Oct. 18-21
with what Earwood
has characterized as
an “enhanced
program.”

“Last year was the
Super Chevy Show’s
first time back in
more than 10 years,”
Earwood said, “and
with the support of
Richmond County
tourism; we
experienced a
remarkable return of
the all GM-event.
Everyone was excited
with the result.”

In addition to Super
Chevy, Rockingham
Dragway will host
the 21st production
of “Mopars at the
Rock” on April 7 and
Fun Ford Weekend on
May 11-12. Phantasm
Street Wars dates
are March 11, April
22, July 21, Aug. 18
and Oct. 7.

The Holcomb
Motorsports Civil
War series, long a
Rockingham mainstay
entering the event’s
18th year, returns
in 2012 with a
spring event March
30-April 1 and a
fall race Sept.
21-23 catering to
the world’s fastest
street cars and the
fans thereof. Back
on the schedule
after an absence of
several years will
be the Carolina
Coalition bracket
series, which
includes events at
Piedmont Dragway,
Mooresville Dragway
and Farmington
Raceway Park as well
as at the Rock.

The track’s biggest
single bracket race,
the annual Memorial
Day weekend bracket
extravaganza, has
been re-christened
to honor the late
“Big John” Leviner,
a long-time track
official who last
fall succumbed to a
heart attack.

“The Big John
Ironman Bracket
Nationals” will be
contested over four
days with champions
crowned daily in Top
Eliminator,
Footbrake and Jr.
Dragster classes.
The event offers
double-up
opportunities for
Carolina Coalition
competitors.

“We are putting the
finishing touches on
our schedule at this
time and are
negotiating other
events for 2012,”
Earwood said. “We
still have a couple
of dates to fill,
however this is
representative of
the direction we’re
going. There’s a lot
of variety and
that’s what we’re
excited about.” |
