ROCKINGHAM, N.C. –
Jeff Nordeen of Simpsonville, S.C.,
beat No. 1 qualifier
and two-time reigning MiRock Superbike
Series champion Tony Girardi of
Hollywood, Fla., in the final round
Sunday to win the featured Outlaw Pro
Street
title in the FBR Shop Spring Open at
Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.
Despite Girardi’s credentials, it
would be inaccurate to characterize
Nordeen
’s victory as an upset. The South
Carolina rider qualified second and,
after easing past Frank Halmon of
Hendersonville, N.C., in round one,
posted the quickest time in every
subsequent round.
His best-of-the-event 7.168 second
effort in the semifinals set the
stage
for a 7.169 second dash that easily
turned back Girardi.
Other winners in the season-opening
event in the eight-race MiRock
Superbike Series were Jason Miller of
Mechanicsville, Md., in Pro Sport
Bike, Matt
Davies of Richmond, Va., in the 5.60
Heads Up class, Ronnie Procopio of
Waldorf, Md., in Pro ET and Andy Lynch
of West Columbia, S.C., in Street ET.
Angie McBride’s much ballyhooed bid to
repeat as the Spring Open champion
in Outlaw Pro Street ended almost
before it began.
On the 7.296 seconds, 188.36 mph run
that qualified her in the No. 4
position, the Lewisville, N.C.,
rider’s bike suffered irreparable
mechanical damage, forcing her to
withdraw from Sunday’s eliminations.
McBride is the track record holder
at 7.126 seconds.
