DORN MAKES LONG TRIP WORTHWHILE AT ROCKINGHAM’S AHDRA FINALE

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Steve Dorn made the long trip from Oregon City, Ore., worth the effort Sunday by winning the featured Top Fuel title at the season-ending AHDRA Screaming Eagle Jim McClure Nationals at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway and, in so doing, snatching the 2009 series championship away from Julian’s Jay Turner.

Dorn, who almost lost his arm in an accident two years ago, qualified only fourth in an international field that included Tak Shigematsu of Ehime, Japan, 2008 series champion Phil Schmidt of Orangevale, Calif., 2008 Rockingham winner Joey Sternotti of West Collingswood Heights, N.J. and Turner.

Despite his middle-of-the-pack start, Dorn was quickest in every racing round, ultimately beating Douglas Horne of Aberdeen, Md., to become the season’s first repeat winner in Top Fuel.  Turner, who came in leading by 20 points, appeared on his way to his second AHDRA title until he ran afoul of Horne in the semifinals.  That gave Dorn all the opening he needed.

Dorn beat John Breckenridge of Sultan, Wash., in round one, laid down a best-of-the-race 6.291 to beat Sternotti in round two and stopped Schmidt in the semifinals.

Although Horne was beaten in the Top Fuel semifinals, he salvaged a victory in Pro Fuel, where he beat Jack Romine of Casa Grande, Ariz., in the finals.  Horne, who moonlights in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, where he’s a Top 5 rider, wasn’t the only NHRA Pro Stock regular to score at The Rock.

In the Pro Gas finals, Angie McBride beat fiancé and reigning NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Matt Smith, denying Smith his second straight win in the Jim McClure Nationals.  Smith is the son of former IHRA Pro Stock Champion and NHRA tour winner “Tricky Ricky” Smith.

Other winners included Andy Simon of Fairless Hlls, Pa., who swept in Pro Stock, qualifying No. 1, setting a national record (8.014 seconds) and beating Shaun Reno of Hayes, Va., in the final.

Chuck Jones of St. Petersburg, Fla., repeated as Pro Drag champion, thereby sewing up the 2009 championship, and Tom Hannum of Wayne, N.J., who beat Greg Krenik of Corrales, N.M., in Pro Mod.
