Smith, who beat Pittsboro’s Jason Harris to win the spring race, saved his best run of the event for the final round. Against Rini, he stopped the eighth mile timers in 3.770 seconds at 198.96 miles per hour. The New York driver trailed at 3.828, 191.46 mph.

A five-time former IHRA Pro Stock champion and the two-time reigning NHRA Pro Modified Champ, Smith qualified his IDG 1968 Camaro replica only eighth in the 16-car field but beat Steve Jackson of Evans, Ga., point leader and No. 1 qualifier Tommy Franklin of Fredericksburg, Va., and fellow Carolinian Jay Cox of Smithfield to get to the final.

Scruggs, who failed to win a single PDRA race last year despite five No. 1 starts, won his fifth race of the current campaign by stopping spring winner Todd Tutterow of Lewisville, N.C., in the money round. Scruggs’ win may have wrapped up the championship insomuch as his two principal rivals, teammates Badir Ahli and Mustafa Buhumaid of Dubai, exited in the first round.

Salemi, a transplanted Canadian, became just the second woman to win a PDRA race and did so in impressive style. The 30-year-old blonde qualified a 1968 Pontiac built by her brother-in-law at G-Force race cars third in the field. She then beat Joe Baker of Milton, Fla., Larry Higginbotham of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, the popular 1941 Willys of Ric Fleck of Lexington, S.C., and DiSomma, who lost in the final for the first time in five appearances.

Although Wilburn won the motorcycle title, he got a big assist from the man he beat in the final. Forster took out point leaders Eric McKinney of Hamersville, Ohio, and Chris Garner-Jones of Harvest, Ala., in the second and third rounds. McKinney and Garner-Jones had won six of the previous seven races, three each.

The eighth race in the series drew teams from 24 states, three Canadian provinces and the United Arab Emirates, home to both Ahli and Buhumaid, the principals in NAS Racing.
