LONGHANY AMONG WINNERS IN NHRA NATIONAL OPEN
Hancock, Taylor Take Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Titles at Rockingham
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – (Oct. 22, 2019) On a Sunday when most of the hardware was snatched up by outsiders, former UNC linebacker-turned-drag racer Jeff Longhany, a native of Wade, outdueled Lumberton’s Terry Taylor, a former IHRA World Champion, to give the home state one of its two Rockingham Dragway victories in the final NHRA National Open event of the season.

Longhany and Taylor, who most recently was the Stock Eliminator winner at the 2018 NHRA Carolina Nationals, had identical reaction times in the final but the winner had his 2000 Chevy Corvette closer to his target by .019 of a second.

Other winners in the event, which was piggy-backed onto the NHRA Lucas Oil Series race, included Jeremy Hancock of Commerce, Ga., in Top Dragster; John Taylor of Naples, Fla., in Top Sportsman; Tony Collier of Delaware, Ohio, in Super Comp, Jeffrey Jewell of Bangor, Pa., in Super Stock and Howard Day of Bristol, Tenn., in Super Gas.

The only other Carolina winner, other than in Jr. Dragster, was Black Mountain’s Bobby Partin, who drove his 1975 Chevy Nova past the ’68 Camaro of Shelby’s Ed Pauley for the Super Street title.

Bladen Core, Benson, won the 10 to 12 year old class and Brody Callahan of Fayetteville won the 6 – 9 class, his second win of the day.
