FORMER TRACK CHAMP AMONG SUPER CHEVY RACE WINNERS

Brown, Knight, Blackman Among Car Show Honorees at Rockingham Dragway

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – With a fiery backdrop provided by the Larsen Motorsports jet dragsters, former track champion and IHRA national event winner Chip Johnson of Fayetteville was among the on-track winners in the annual Super Chevy Show presented by Richmond County Tourism and contested Saturday and Sunday at Rockingham Dragway.

Johnson drove his 1982 Camaro to victory over Joey Langley of Great Falls, S.C., in the Sunday Top ET final to join Tommy Bradshaw, Ben Roberts, Jamie Carroll, Ted Carter and Trey Sikes in the winners’ circle. Sikes was the event’s only double winner, sweeping both of the Trophy events and reaching the final round of Sunday’s D.O.T. race before losing to Carter.

Meanwhile, Marine Corps veteran DeWayne Hill won the best of three jet dragster match race, upsetting boss, teammate and two-time IHRA jet champion Elaine Larsen in two straight races while reaching a finish line speed of almost 280 miles per hour in his “Dominator” jet.

More than 60 exceptional vehicles were recognized in the car show with Gary Brown of Buford, Ga., one time owner of Atlanta Dragway, joining Brian Knight of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Durham’s Terri Blackman as Gold Cup winners, Brown for his 1956 Chevy, Knight for a ’66 Chevelle and Blackman for his classic ’67 Camaro.
