FURR AMONG WINNERS IN NATIONAL OPEN
Whitaker Claims Top Dragster, Snow Wins Top Sportsman at
Rockingham
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Former Lucas Oil Series national champion
Steve Furr drove his 1968 Chevy Camaro past the ’99 Dodge
Daytona of Florida’s John Taylor in Sunday’s final round to
win the Super Gas title in an NHRA National Open event that
completed doubleheader weekend at Rockingham Dragway.
Furr, a multiple time Southeast Division champion and
Rockingham winner, used an .024 package to beat Taylor to the
finish by an almost indiscernible .007 of a second.
Other winners of the event contested on Rockingham’s eighth
mile course included Alexis Whitaker of Telford, Tenn., who
slipped past second generation driver Vance Houston of Newland
to win Top Dragster, and Calvin Snow of Lyman, S.C., who won
Top Sportsman in his 1970 Chevy Nova after coming up short in
Saturday’s final round in the Lucas Oil Series event.
Tim Sloan of Broadway, runner-up two years ago in the Lucas
Oil divisional, drove his 1998 Pontiac Grand Am to a Super
Stock win; Kinston’s Dennis Pope forced five-time Rockingham
track champion Chip Johnson of Fayetteville into a breakout
foul to win Stock; Brandon Page of Boiling Springs, S.C.,
topped NHRA national event winner Lauren Freer in Super Comp;
and Chris Webb of Four Oaks prevailed in Super Street.
In the Junior Dragster division, Saturday Lucas winner Lavar
Lewis Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va., doubled up in the Advanced
class, Angier’s Lane Morgan won the Intermediate title and
Corey Reed of Winder, Ga., hoisted the Novice trophy.

Hidalgo Wins Both Stock and Super Stock in NHRA Southeast
Division Finale
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. –Former NHRA NationalChampions Jeff
Strickland of Red Bay, Ala., and Devin Isenhowerof Brownsburg,
Ind., were among the winners Saturday as Rockingham Dragway
played host to drivers from 22 states in the final Southeast
Division race in the NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
The two-day Lucas Oil event, contested on the standard quarter
mile, was the opener in Rockingham’s doubleheader weekend
program that concluded Sunday with an NHRA National Open on
the eighth-mile course.
On Saturday, Strickland won the featured Top Dragster title,
Isenhower prevailed in Super Comp, Scott Underwood of Madison,
Ill., scored in Top Sportsman, Lucas Series national
championship-contender Rob Kropfeld of Hamilton, Ohio, raised
the trophy in Super Gas; Allan Kremkau of Orlando, Fla., was
the surprise winner in Super Street;and Van Puckett, the
veteran Southeast Division racer from Monroe, Ga., upset
division point leader David Eaton to win Competition
Eliminator.
Nevertheless, the overall star of the show was Jimmy Hidalgo
of Donaldsonvlle, La., who won both the Super Stock and Stock
titles. In the latter final, he drove his 2004 Pontiac GTO
past the 1968 Camaro of Matt Lisa of Vernon, N.J., son of 2020
Super Stock winner Joe Lisa.
The winners in Jr. Dragster were Lavar Lewis Jr. of
Mechanicsville, Va. In the Advanced category, Matthew Peterson
of Punta Gorda, Fla., in Intermediate and Tanner Mocny of
Venice, Fla., in Novice.
